Thermal dissociation of iodides was conducted by the Van Arkel scheme. Sublimated iodine was introduced into the apparatus without breaking the vacuum. The process was conducted in a small-size glass apparatus with a branch serving to establish the vapor pressure. Industrial cubicshaped Nb, transformed into chips, was used as initial raw material. Of three parameters (filament, branch, and retort temperature) only one was varied. The filament temperature was 900 deg C in all the experiments; the retort temperature varied from 350 to 700 deg C. The rate of Nb deposition, at a temperature variation up to 600 deg C, increased monotonously with higher temperature of the branch piece (under these conditions NbI/sub 3/ is stable). At retort temperature >620 deg C a maximum appears on the deposition rate-branch temperature curves within the 225 to 250 deg C range (NbI/sub 5/ is stable). It is shown that the rate of Nb deposition at 650 to 700 deg C retort temperature is 19 times higher than the deposition rate at 350 deg C under optimum conditions, and is equal to 22.8 x 10/sup -3/ mm/ min. The O and H contents in metal iodide depend on the deposition process conditions and increase with a higher temperature of the branch. Experiments on an enlarged scale were also performed.
