Irradiation of aqueous solutions of 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran in the presence of oxygen and in vacuo gave mainly tetrahydropyran-2,3-diol and tetrahydropyran-2- ol if barium carbonate was added to retain neutrality. The production of delta - hydroxyvaleric acid is explained by scission of the ether linkage, and supporting evidence is produced by studying the radiation products from tetrahydropyran. (auth)
