METAPHOSPHATE GLASS AS AN INTEGRATING DOSIMETER

Journal Article · · Health Physics (England)
OSTI ID:4722891
A glass comprising a mixture of metaphosphates, one of which is AgFO/sub 3/, has the property of fluorescing under ultraviolet light after exposure to ionizing radiation. This property was used in the design of microdosimeters of gamma radiation. The dosimeters consist of rods 8 mm long and 1 mm in diameter. The amount of fluorescence is approximately proportional to dose up to several thousand roentgens. The lower limit is fixed by the pre-dose fluorescence. An evaluation was made of the response of these dosimeters using a modified and improved micro-dosimeter reader. Data are presented on the time-dependence of low-dose response of fluorods of several nifferent compositions exposed to 10 mr of radium gamma -rays per working day for one year. (C.H.)
