STUDIES ON SILVER ACTIVATED METAPHOSPHATE GLASS AS A PERSONNEL MONITORING DOSIMETER

Journal Article · · Health Physics (England)
Characteristics of high senisitivity, low Z, silveractivated metaphosphate glass were investigated for adequacy as a personnel monitoring dosimeter. Limitation of application and advantages and disadvantages of the dosimeter eter in comparison with the photographic dosimeter are discussed. Characteristics of photon energy dependence, directional dependence, and linearity between dose and response were quite good in comparison with those of film. Mean error of measurement with a single glass dosimeter could be made to be less than plus or minus 5 per cent for gamma and x radiation. Fluorescent centers were found quite stable, and the fading was less than 5 per cent in 6 months storage. Cleaning with a synthetic detergent was shown to make the mass handling of the glasses easier in routine operation. For monitoring the accumulated dose of gamma radiation, especially for the accumulation of small dosage during a long period, a single glass would be a better substitute for a film badge, both in accuracy and cost. The only disadvantage of the glass dosimeter compared to film badge seems to be in the differential measurements of various kinds of radiation, for it requires more than two pieces of glass, according to the characteristics of the radiation fields.
