RADICAL AND MOLECULAR REACTION MECHANISMS FOR ($gamma$,n) ACTIVATED C$sup 11$ REACTIONS IN LIQUID CYCLOHEXANE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4722834
A study was made of the yields of gaseous products labelled with C/sup 11/ from the C/sup 12/( gamma ,n) reaction in liquid cyclohexane. The effects of variations in the radiation dose and in the concentration of dissolved I/sub 2/ during irradiation on the yields of these products were studied to elucidate the reaction mechanisms. A reaction model was developed as a method of assessing the relative importance of radical and molecular processes. The data suggest that the formation of C/sup 11/ labeled CH/sub 4/, C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ + C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ , and C/sub 3 /H/sub 6/ involves a hot radical process while the formation of C/ sub 2/H/sub 2/ is by a molecular reaction with cyclohexane.
