ADAPTATION OF GAMMA DOSIMETRIC FILMS TO THERMAL NEUTRON DOSIMETRY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4722732
Gamma dosimetric films can be adapted for thermal neutron dosimetry by covering them with a cadmium filter which captures neutrons with subsequent emission of gamma rays. Such filtered films were calibrated using a known thermal neutron dose. The ratio of the neutron dose in rems to corresponding dose in rads of radiative capture gamma rays was found to be 0.57 if the latter is estimated by calculation, and 0.49 if it is estimated from the film blackening. The two figures agree to within less than the 20% error which is tolerated in health dosimetry. By reducing the filter thickness to the half-value layer for thermal neutrons the film blackening can be made to show the dose in rems of both gamma rays and thermal neutrons without distinction.
