In an introductory survey of the literature, the advantages of film dosimetry are discussed, followed by a brief survey of the photographic elementary process and the forms in which ionizing radiation releases energy. Then there is a discussion of the wave-length dependence of film blackening, its measurement, and methods of reducing it, i.e., emulsion technique, metal filtering, and fluorescence screens, with their advantages and disadvantages. In conclusion, the filteranalysis method of evaluation and its limitations are discussed, together with practical requlrements for dosimetric films and the dosimetry of complex radiation mixtures ( BETA and neutron dosimetry). It is concluded that the known processes all have numerous weaknesses and are not sufficiently universal in their application; however, improvements caa be made. 64 references. (auth)
