NEUTRON POLARIZATION MEASUREMENTS USING A LIQUID HELIUM SCINTILLATING SCATTERER

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4722236

The polarization of the high-energy ground-state group of neutrons from the Li/sup 7/(d,n)Be/sup 8/ reaction was measured, using deuterons of various energy provided by a Van de Graaff accelerator. These neutrons were scattered from a specially developed liquid-helium scintillating scatterer into right and left stilbene crystals, and the right-left asymmetry ratio was used to deduce the neutron polarization from the measured product of neutron polarization and helium analyzing power. The vaiues of the He analyzing power used were those calculated by Levintov et al. A fastslow coincidence requirement was used between the recoiling alpha particles in the liquid He and the right or left stilbene detectors, in order to ensure that the observed neutrons were from the ground state group, scattered first from the He and then into the detectors. At 29 deg lab. emission angle, the ground state Li/sup 7/(d,n)Be/sup 8/ neutron group exhibits a polarization which rises with deuteron bombarding energy to a value of approximately 12 to .018 at 1.1 Mev. At a bombarding energy of 1 Mev, the polarization increases from a value of zero at zero degrees to approximately .10 at 45 deg emission angle, and then becomes smaller at larger angles. (M.P.G.)
