GAMMA EFFECTS ON DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES OF INSULATION MATERIALS. I. METHODS FOR MEASURING DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES DURING IRRADIATION (in Russian)

Measurements were made of the electric conductivity, penetrability, dielectric losses, and electric resistance of insulation materials exposed to 1.25-Mev gamma radiation at 20 r/sec. The electric conductivity was measured with accuracies from 4% at sigma = 10/sup -12/ to 10/sup -14/ to 40% at sigma = 10/sup -19/ ohm/sup -1/ cm/sup -1/. The dielectric losses were studied at frequencies of 40 to 10, 10, 10, 3 x 10/sup 9/, and 10/sup 10/ c/sec. The order of error for tg delta at 40 to 10/sup 5/ c/sec and 3 x 10/sup 9/ to 10/sup 10/ c/sec was about 10%, for 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 7/ and 10/sup 9/ to 10/s up 10/ c/ sec and tg delta = 10/sup -4/ the order of error was 30%. The order of error for penetrability was 3%. The measured characteristics of polyethylene and plastic AG-4 are tabulated. (R.V.J.)
