The method and apparatus used are described for the chemical separation of Li/sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/ by fractional precipitation from a solution in which the Li isotopes are present as specific complex ions. The complex ions used, in addition to Li, are Al, Cr, Mo, W, U, V, Nb, and Ta, and at least one radical of at least one polybasic organic acid-oxalic, citric, or tartaric. The best results are obtained with Al salts. The separation of the complex ions is effected by carefully controlled fractional precipitation from a substantially homogeneous environment. (P.C.H.)
