CRITICAL HEAT FLUX OF SOME POLYPHENYL COOLANTS
PLEASE DELETE ABSTRACT # 10800<>17:010801Boiling heat transfer to isopropanol from a steam-heated chrome-plated Cu tube 0.375 in. in dia. was increased as much as four times the normal peak heat flux by the application of up to 3,500 volts d-c between the liquid and the tube. The heat transfer coefficient at 3,500 volts and a DELTA T of 128 deg F was 3,120 Btu/hr sq.-ft- deg F. The process completely eliminated film and transitional boiling above 500 volts, and the boiling is nucleate over the entire range of temperature difference covered (40 to 180 deg F). This large effect of voltage appears to involve a condenser effect which destabilizes the vapor space between the liquid and the heat transfer surface and is not due to dielectrophoresis in a convergent field. The results obtained substantiate the theories of surface wetting during transitional boiling. (auth)
