THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF IRRADIATED POLYPHENYL COOLANTS. PART II. ENTHALPY AND SPECIFIC HEAT
Erthalpy and specific heat values were determined over the temperature range of 300 to 850 deg F with a Southard drop type calorimeter for polyphenyl organic materials of interest as urganic reactor coolants. The enthalpy determinations, which form the basis for the specific heat values, were performed in duplicate at 50 to 100 deg F intervals. The specific heat of unirradiated Core I OMRE coollinearly by about 0.037 Btu/lb- deg F for each 100 degree increase in temperature. The specific heat of irradiated OMRE coolants decreased linearly with increasing HB content at 600 deg F. Experimental enthalpy measurements were also made on biphenyl, Santowax OMP, and Santowax R; however, the enthalpy and specific heat values are considered to be biased due to the effects of solidification of these higher melting materials on the thermal transient in the calorimeter.
