SINTERING STUDIES OF MOLYBDENUM-COATED URANIUM DIOXIDE PARTICLES

Compacts of Mo-coated UO/sub 2/ with a density 93 to 95% of the theoretical were prepared by vapor phase deposition of Mo on UO/sub 2/ particles of 100 to 150- size at 700 un. Concent 85% C for 2 hr, and then cold pressing the coated particles at 32 tons/in./sup 2/ and sintering the resulting pellets in dry H atmosphere at 1500 un. Concent 85% C for 5 hr. In their bulk density and porosity, the pellets of Mo-coated UO/sub 2/ obtained under the above conditions compared favorably with pellets of a mixture of Mo and UO/sub 2/ particles. (auth)
