THE DEVELOPMENT AND PROPERTIES OF BERYLLIUM-CALCIUM ALLOYS FOR USE IN HIGH TEMPERATURE, HIGH PRESSURE CARBON DIOXIDE

Journal Article · · Journal of Nuclear Materials (Netherlands)
The development of Be-Ca alloys for use in COsub 2/ at high temperatures and high gas pressures is described. Alloys were developed containing Ca in amounts greater than 0.08 wt%, that show outstanding resistance to corrosion at temperatures up to 700 un. Concent 85% C in both wet and dry CO/sub 2/ at a pressure of 21.5 atm. The corrosion resistance of the alloys decreases with a decrease in the CO/sub 2/ pressure and increases with an increase in the amount of Ca added. Variations in the H/sub 2/O content of the CO/sub 2/ from 30 ppm by weight to 300 ppm by weight have no effect on the corrosion behavior of the alloys, while an increase in the corrosion test temperature from 600 to 7O0 un. Concent 85% C has a negligible effect on the corrosion rate after the initial 1500 hr exposure. Indications that a satisfactory corrosion behavior could be obtained from the Be-Ca alloys at temperatures in excess of 700 un. Concent 85% C are discussed and tentative suggestions are made to explain the mechanism of corrosion of the alloys in CO/sub 2/. It is evident from the results of mechanical tests that the addition of Ca to Be in amounts up to 0.72 wt%, and probably higher, has a negiigible effect on the high-temperature ductility. Heat treatment effects shown by the Be- Ca alloys are thought to be caused by an overaging reaction involving the precipitation of impurities, notably Fe present in the base Be. (P.C.H.)
