MECHANICAL DEVICE FOR MOVING REACTOR CONTROL AND SAFETY RODS IN NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4719864
The mechanical device consists of a thimble-like extension tube that is flanged to the reactor vessel, a rack and pinion drive unit within the extension tube that is geared to a motor outside the tube, and a shaft that is rigidly but demountably attached to the control rod and to the rack of the unit. The shaft is shaped in such a way that when moving the rod in one of its two extreme positions, the opening of the reactor vessel is sealed. In order to prevent contamination of the thimble and the drive unit with fission products it is proposed to establish a continuous flow of reactor coolant between the two head sides of the thimble and through the annulus formed between the rack and the shaft for one thing and the thimble for another, the flow being directed to the opening in the reactor vessel.
