THE GAS PHASE RADIOLYSIS OF 2-BUTYNE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4719202
Pyrex ampoules of gaseous 2-butyne (dimethylacetylene) were exposed to Co/sup 60/ gamma rays, and the 100-ev yields of the lower molecular weight products are given. The radioinduced products were studied as a function of sample pressure and total dose. The products, which include hydrogen, methane, acetylene, propene, propyne, cis- and trans-2-butene, butane, 1,2-butadiene, and vinylacetylene, are explained on the basis of ion-molecule and free radical reactions. Some mechanisms of product formation, which are consistent with product distribution and magnitude of the yields, are discussed. (auth) The neutron absorption cross section of the fission
