DISTRIBUTION AND KINETICS OF SODIUM (Na$sup 22$) IN MICE AND RABBITS

BS>The distribution and kinetics of Na/sup 22/ in mice and rabbits were studied autoradiographically and by scintillation counting at various intervals after an intravenous injection of Na/sup 22/ in an isotonic solution. The amount of Na/sup 22/ after the steady state was reached was highest in teeth among the various organs and tissues studied and decreased in the order: teeth, cartilage, bone, urine, papillary muscle, blood vessel walls, blood, gall bladder contents, lung, kidney, amniotic fluid, heart muscle, skin, fetal brain, brain, salivary gland, intestinal contents, feces, liver, gastric mucosa, muscle, gastric contents. The kinetics of sodium in the mice and rabbits was very rapid. The steady state was reached for most of the tissues within a few minutes. The build- up of Na/sup 22/ in teeth, brain, and bones was, however, extremely prolonged. The uptake of Na/sup 22/ in the fetal brain and spinal cord was significantly higher than that in the maternal brain and spinal cord. (P.C.H.)
