The Cancerogenic Effect of X-Ray on the Larynx
>Six cases are cited showing that radiotherapy of benign larynx papillomas considerably increases the possibility of later malignancy. Out of the 6 cases of laryngeal papillomas, which became malignant during the period from 1950 to 1959, in 4 patients radiotherapy had been previously given. Malignancy occurred 5 months, and 8, 14, and 15 yr after irradiation. A case of laryngeal carcinoma was also observed in a woman who had been treated twice with x rays for a tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck 19 yr previously. The other 4 cases were all men aged 34 to 53 yr old who had received 30 to 40 irradtation treatments; in only one case could the dose be determined (6200 r). The literature relating to radiotherapy-induced cancer of the larynx is also reviewed. (H.H.D.)
