When lymph node cells from rabbits sensitized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) or bovine serum gamma -globulin (BGG) were restimulated in vitro with homologous antigens and transferred to the cheek pouch of x-irradiated (450 r) hamsters, they produced specific antibody in the recipients The antibody produced in the hamsters is identical with rabbit gamma -globulin. Specific changes in the morphology of the transferred cells during the process of antibody production in the heterologous host are described. Changes in the population from small lymphocytes to large mononuclear cells and subsequent differentiation either into plasma cells or into small and medium-sized lymphocytes were noted. Mitotic indexes determined daily after injection of colchicine showed a low mitotic activity on the first 2 days after transfer and increased activity on the third and fourth days after transfer. It is postulated that some of the cells enlarge, divide, and differentiate into cells that contain antiBSA or anti-BGG as a result of the antigenic stimulus with BSA or BGG, and that others enlarge, divide, and differentiate into cells that contain antibody to the host constituents that are foreign to these cells.
