THE UTILIZATION OF SODIUM HYPOPHOSPHATE FOR THE SEPARATION OF THORIUM FROM CERIUM

The distribution of Ce between solid and liquid phases was investigated with the help of Ce/sup 144/, in reactions where a 1:5 mixture of Th and Ce was precipitated from sulfuric and hydrochloric acid solutions by Na/sub 2/H/sub 2/P/ sub 2/O/sub 6/, used in an excess of 150%. Ce/sup 4+/ was reduced to Ce/sup 3+/ by H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ before and after precipitation by the hypophosphate. It was established that, if Ce/sup 4+/ is reduced before the addition of the precipitant, practically all Ce remains in sulfuric acid solution, for concentrations of H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 N, and in hydrochloric acid solution, for concentrations of HCl between 2.5 and 4 N. Proceeding from the knowledge of solubility of ThP/sub 2/O/sub 6/ in acids, it was assumed that practically all the Th is in the solid phase. Methods were worked out for the preparation of pure Na/sub 2/H/sub 2/P/sub 2/O/sub 6/ from red P. (Referativnyy zhurnal, Khimiya, No. 6, 1962).
