The separation factor alpha of the system H/sub 2/O/sup 16-H/sub 2/O/ sup 18/ was determined in the range 20 to 210 deg by a differential method. At 100 deg , alpha = 1.0038. The difference in vapor pressures of standard water and water enriched with H/sub 2/O/sup 18/ to 43.6 mole % was measured. From the values of alpha , calculations were made of the difference in the heats of vaporization, of the vapor pressure of 100% H/sub 2/O/sup 18/ in the range 20 to 210 deg C and of its boiling point at 760 mm Hg. With the aid of an interferometer, the dependence of the difference in refractive indexes for H/sub 2/O/sup 18/-H/sub 2/O/sup 16/ upon the H/sub 2/O/sup 18/ concentration in water at 20 deg was determined. It was found that this dependence is of iinear character. The temperature coefficient of the refractive index difference H/sub 2/O/sup 18/-H/sub 2/O/sup 18/ in the range 10 to 30 deg was determined. The density and its dependence upon the H/sub 2/O/sup 18/ concentration were determined by a quartz pycnometer at 25, 30, and 40 deg . The dependence is in the form of a straight line. On the basis of the relationship obtained, it was calculated that 100% H/sub 2/O/sup 18/ at 25 deg has a density 1.10723 times that of river water. The temperature dependence of the density of heavy oxygen water in the range 25 to 40 deg was also determined. The accuracy of the density determination was plus or minus 0.00001 g/cm/sup 3/. The H/sub 2/O/sup 18/enriched water was purged of deuterium by the ironsteam method. Isotopic analysis of the purified water was carried out by mass spectrometer and the drop method. (auth)
