RADIOCHEMICAL POLYMERIZATION OF BIS(CHLOROMETHYL)-3,3-OXETANE IN THE SOLID STATE (in French)

Bis(chloromethyl)3,3-oxetane is not polymerized when it is irradiated in the liquid state. On the contrary, the irradiation of the solid monomer leads to a very rapid polymerization that has a direct relation with temperature. All the conversion curves have an induction period followed by an acceleration. When the conversion is represented as a function of the logarithm of time, curves having an importart linear portion are obtained. After a certain conversion, generaliy between 5 and 15%, the results are poorly reproducible and the reaction is sometimes completely arrested. The polymerization is more rapid and the polymer mass is higher when the monomer is slowly crystallized and is present in the form of large crystals. The relation between the velocity and the intensity of the radiation is very complex; the intensity exponent decreases regularly with the latter. The activation energy of the reaction is 3.0 kcal/ mol between -78 and 15 deg C. The reaction is not affected by the classical inhibitors of radical reactions. The results are discussed within the framework of actual knowledge on radiochemical polymerization of heterocyclic monomers. (tr-auth)
