RADIATION-INDUCED POLYMERIZATION IN CRYSTAL (in Japanese)

Radiation-induced solid state polymerization of cyclic monomers, such as trioxane, tetroxane, BETA -propiolactone, and 3,3 bis(chloromethyl) oxetane was investigated. It was observed that the polymerization reaction was influenced strongly by the structure of the monomer crystal. The structure of the polymer obtained was examined by x-raydiffraction analysis. The polymers of trioxane and tetraoxane were shown to have a three dimensionally oriented structure, and to be in helical configuration. The existence of twin crystallites was observed clearly in the polymer crystals of trioxane and 3,5-bis(chloromethyl) oxetane. Two kinds of polymers obtained from BETA -propiolactone and 3,3- bis(chloromethyl) oxetane were found to have the planar zig-zag configuration. These characteristic configurations of the polymer crystals are understo alpha d as effects of epitaxy of monomer crystal structure. That is, the effects of epitaxy appear most pronounced in the case of trioxane because of the symmetrical hexagonal structure of both monomer and polymer crystal. (JAIF)
