ELECTROSTATIC GENERATOR GROUP PROGRESS REPORT, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4717362
Design and development of an electrostatic generator facility for accelerating both negative and positive ions is described. The arrangement consists of a horizontal tandem accelerator and a vertical accelerator. The accelerators can be operated individually or as a compound machine. In the latter situation, negative ions may be injected into the vertical machine by a source at its top, accelerated through voltages of 8-- l0 mv, and deflected through 90 deg into the tandem machine to yield 20-Mev proton beams and 60- to 80-Mev oxygen and sulfur ions. The various components of the system are examined, and a small Van de Graaff (900 kv) and a larger accelerator (5 mv) used in development of the Oxford electrostatic generator are described. Results of tests performed with the two are also given. Ion source development and the beam optics of the facility receive particular attention. (D.C.W.)
