The Effect of Radiation on the Production of Mucin in Salivary Glands and the Female Genital Tract of Rodents

Pelvic exposure of rats and mice to doses of 300 to 400 r resulted in increased mucin secretion and suppression of keratinization. Estrogen prevented or modified keratinization suppression by radiation, depending on the timing of radiation and of estrogen administration. Similar results were obtained with vaginal cells in tissue cultures. Vitamin A also inhibited the keratinization of vaginal epithelium. The salivary glands in rats showed long-term changes in type and quantity of secretion after irradiation with doses of 850 r/day for 4 days. Radiation damaged the reproductive capacity of acinar cells and induced a compensatory secretory activity in cells of the sublingual ducts and hypertrophy of the secretory tubules of the submandibular.
