EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON BLOOD VESSEL CHANGES IN THE IRRADIATED KIDNEY (in German)

Injury of the human kidney is described in 60 cases that received radiation doses of 2000 to 6850 r, and was seen clinically as albuminuria, edema, and terminal uremia, and sometimes hypertension. Histologically, lesions in the glomeruli and blood vessels were most severe, and resulted in secondary changes in the tubules and interstitial fibrosis. Vascular necrosis was most prominent in the arterioles and small arteries. To clarify the course of radioinduced renal lesions, their pathogenesis was studied in the rat and rabbit. As in man, hypertension could be induced in the rat by renal radiation, but in rabbits, unlike the case in rats, tubular changes were severe, as was the resulting interstitial fibrosis. Rat glomerulus appeared to be more radioresistant and remained intact despite severe tubular lesions. Arterioles and small arteries also appeared to be more resistant but in a few instances radiation seemed to have an atherogenic effect in the vessels. Renal vessels in both rat and rabbit appear to be less sensitive to radiation than in man; their injury in man probably accounts for the hypertension that sometimes follows renal irradiation.
