THE RADIOPROTECTIVE EFFECT OF CYSTEINE, AET AND CYSTAMINE ON CHROMOSOME DAMAGE IN ALLIUM CEPA ROOT TIPS

Journal Article · · Radiation Botany
The ability of 5 x 10/sup -2/M cysteine, 5 x 10/sup -3/M AET (S, 2aminoethylisothiouronium bromide hydrobromide), and 2.5 x 10/sup -3/M cystamine (all solutions a pH 6.5) to protect Allium cepa root tips against x ray induced chromosome aberrations was examined by scorings in anaphase 6, 12, and 600 r. It was found that cysteine as well as AET had some protective effect, while cystamine was inactive. Cysteine led to a more pronounced reduction (53 per cent) of chromosome damage than did AET (35 per cent). (auth)
