TREATMENT OF THE LATE SKIN REACTIONS TO X RAYS
Treatment for dermatitis and lesions in mucous membranes, particularly as a result of supe rvoltage radiation therapy of deep malignant tumors, is discussed. Local treatments include the use of ointments and other externally active agents, physiotherapy, and surgery. Generalized treatments may employ radioprotective agents, antihistamines, antiphlogistics, hormones, organ extracts, and vitamins. Radioreactions in skin and later scarring are diminished by agents that decrease the circulation or the oxygen supply of skin. This can be demonstrated in hibernating animals. It was also shown that application of a powder to skin before exposing it to 4500 r doses of Co/sup 90/ radiation markedly inhibited the erythematous and epilatory response in skin. Powder was more effective than ointments in this respect, and some ointments, such as those containing triglycerides, may increase the reddening of skin. On the other hand, ointment containing protective agents, such as methionine and cysteamine, may lessen the skin reaction. Numerous other substances have been reported to reduce the skin reaction, when given parenterally, including antihistamines, vitamins A, C, K, and P, Chamazulene, and corticosteroids. Specific treatments for radiodermatitis of the bullous, necrotizing, and chronic scarring type are discussed. The improved healing tendency in patients with hyperthyroidism suggests that treatment with thyroid hormone may enhance the healing of radiation ulcers in skin. (H.H.D.)
