A histochemical investigation was made of the influence of a 1200 rad Co/ sup 60/- gamma -total-body irradiation upon the BETA glucuronidase, adenosine triphosphatase, cytochrome oxidase, and monoamine oxidase of the intestinal wall of rats and upon the pseudocholine esterase of the intestine of rats and guinea pigs. BETA -glucuronidase had a higher activity with abnormal distribution 1 hour after irradiation and activity loss in the intestinal villi and ganglion cells 48 hours after irradiation. The adenosine triphosphatase content of the intestinal villi was reduced 1 hour after irradiation but became normal later. The activity in the muscularis decreased after 1 hour and was still low after 48 hours. The cytochrome oxidase content of the intestinal villi decreased 4 hours after irradiation and increased again after 24 hours and decreased again after 48 hours. The enzyme content of the villi stroma was not influenced by irradiation. The monoamine oxidase of the intestinal villi decreased 1 hour after irradiation and after 4 hours showed a high activity in the Crypts of Lieberkuehn, which normally do not show any activity. The activity of the enzyme in the villi and in the Crypts of Lieberkuehn decreased after 48 hours. The pseudocholine esterase of the intestinal wall of rats and guinea pigs showed high activity in the Crypts of Lieberkuehn 1 hour after irradiation as well as an abnormal distribution in the villi after 1 hour and after 24 hours (guinea pigs). Enzyme activity could not be detected after 48 hours. The functional importance of enzyme changes is discussed. (auth)
