THE RADIUS AND COULOMB ENERGY OF THE He$sup 3$ NUCLEUS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The radius and Coulomb energy of He/sup 3/ are calculated using a symmetrical wave function appropriate to hardcore nuclear potentials and sufficiently flexible to describe adequately the asymptotic form and two-particle correlations in this system, requirements that are sufficient to fix the parameters of the wave function. For hard-core radius d preliminary te 0.5-0.6 fm, the rms radius agrees with that measured by Hofstadter and Collard, and the Coulomb energy is within 0.05 Mev of the difference between the (H/sup 3/,He/sup 3/) binding energies. From this comparison, it is concluded that deviations from charge symmetry amount to no more than of relative order alpha / e (as Fe/sup 59 for the low energy n-n and p-p interactions in the /sup 1/S/sub 0/ state.
