QUANTITATION OF CALCIUM METABOLISM. THEORY
A detailed, formal analysis of Ca metabolism is presented that permits measurement of sizes and exchange rates of compartments constituting the Ca pool, as well as the following unidirectional rates: bone formation and resorption, absorption, urinary Ca output, and endogenous fecal Ca loss. The last can also be expressed as a fraction of the rate of formation of digestive juice Ca. Two possible schemes of Ca metabolism are presented and analyzed; these differ in their account of the origin of endogenous fecal Ca. Calculations according to either scheme are detailed. Both general and special methods of analysis of Ca metabolism are presented, their advantages and drawbacks discussed, and their applicability evaluated. (auth)
