THE MEASUREMENT OF WATER FLOW WITH RADIOISOTOPES. PART I (in German)

Journal Article · · Wasserwirtschaft (West Germany)
OSTI ID:4715140
The measuring of flow velocities of water in open channels and underground with the help of radioisotopes is surveyed. Investigations were made on the applicability of radioisotopes in measuring the flow of winding river sections, such as Loisach and Isar in Bavaria, in order to make provisions against flood damage. At a certain moment, 9 mc of I/sup 131/ in the form of NaI were dispersed over the entire river width, and 3 hr later 30 km downstream 61 water samples were collected every 5 min for 5 hr. The I/sup 131/ was precipitated, filtered, and the activity measured with a BETA counter. The maximum activity was reached 5 hr and 6 min after injection, from which a mean flow velocity of 25 cu m/sec was calculated. (OID)
