MODIFICATION OF RADIATION INJURY BY LEUKEMOID LEUKOCYTES

Journal Article · · Laboratory Investigation (U.S.)

To define the mechanism by which leukemoid leukocytes promote recovery from x-ray injury, a comparison between the effects of leukemoid leukocytes and isologous bone marrow was made, Male and female BALB/c mice were exposed to 750 r, and within 4 hr after irradiation were given an intravenous injection of either 10 x 10/sup 6/ nucleated isoiogous bone marrow cells or 100 x 10/sup 6/ isologous leukemoid leukocytes. These numbers of cells were found to give consistently good 30-day survival. With both cell types recovery rates of white blood cell elements, red blood cells, and platelets were nearly alike after irradiation. Recovery rates of spleen and thymus, and body weight recovery were also nearly equivalent for the 2 treatments. Histology of recovering hemopoietic tissues was also similar, with the exception of lymphatic tissue elements. Total iife span was apparently the same in both groups. Homologous leukemoid leukocytes were usually detrimentai to irradiated mice, presumably because immunologically competent celis were present. (H.H.D.)
