CHANGES OF THE DENTOMAXILLARY SYSTEM IN MULTIPLE X-RAY IRRADIATION

Studies were made on the influence of repeated x irradiation on the dentomaxillary system in albino rats. Single doses averaged 25, 50, and 100 r, the total dose amounting to 3500 r. The depth of radiation changes in the jaws and teeth depended on the value of total x-ray doses. In the action of total doses (1,200 to 1,600 r) at first the mucous membrane became involved, whereby higher doses (3,500 r) caused affection of the teeth and bone tissue of jaws. Edema, hemorrhages, gingivitis, and ulcerative-necrotic changes were noted in the mucous membrane. The dental pulp showed blood congestion, edema, fibrosclerosis, and reticular atrophy, pycnosis, and vacuolization of odontoblast nuclei, and sometimes necrosis of the pulp. The bone tissue of the jaws, along with resorption of the bone with the participation mostly of macrophages (osteoclasts rarely), processes of bone tissue regeneration were observed with the participation of osteoblasts.
