THE EVAPORATION OF MOLYBDENUM IN THE PRESENCE OF CESIUM VAPOR
Initial measurements of the deposition of molybdenum from a molybdenum cathode onto a nickel anode in the presence of cesium vapor showed a significant reduction over that for vacuum evaporation. The ribbon filament in these experiments was heated electrically and the quantity of deposited molybdenum determined by spectro-chemical analysis. Four cathode-anode spacings were provided to determine the dependence of the deposit on spacing. These initial results were refined and extended to cover a larger range of emitter temperatures and cesium pressures. The data were fitted to Rv/R = 1 + apd where the left side is the ratio of deposition in vacuum to that in cesium vapor, p is the pressure and d the spacing with a equal to 0.06 mm. Hg/sup -1/ mu /sup -1/. Over the limited range of cesium coverage of these experiments any enhancement of molybdenum evaporation because of the cesium coverage was small, and no whisker growth caused by returned molybdenum was detected.
