Visualization of the Shock Front in an Electromagnetic Shock Tube

The shadowgraph and schlieren-interferometer methods were used for the visualization of the shock front in an electromagnetic shock tube. The view through the channel was free in a direction vertical to the discharge along the whole length of the tube including the spark gap. The schlieren methods permit a direct observation of the shock front and are therefore appropriate to resolve the controversy on the exact position of the shock front relative to the luminous front.
