The processes in an electromagnetic shock tube (T-tube) were investigated with drum camera, Kerr cell camera, and multipliers. From a great number of drum camera photographs and average path-time curve for the luminous phenomena for pressures from 0.02 to 50 torr was obtained. At higher pressures a separation of the weakly luminous shock front from the real luminous front was observed. Kerr cell photographs showed an uneven structure in the luminous front which is regarded as the contact front, that is, the gas behind this front is heated by means of the discharge. For this front therefore the RankineHugoniot equation could not therefore be used directly, as frequently assumed, especially not at lower pressures at which the shock front and luminous front coincide. The equation is valid only for the separated shock front, in of the gases before the shock front are also considered. (tr-auth)
