The cross section and the momentum spectrum of LAMBDA hyperons produced in the interaction of 7-Bev pions with protons were calculated in the one-meson pole approximation. The results of the calculations agree with the experimental data if the resonance K- pi interaction experimentally observed is taken into account. The momentum spectrum of A hyperons has a characteristic two-humped shape. In the resonance approximation the inelastic pi --p interactions with the many-meson intermediate states were treated. It is shown that within the accuracy of the presently avaliable experimental data the contribution from such interactions may be neglected. (auth)
