A PORTABLE RATE METER FOR MEASURING $alpha$ AND $beta$ ACTIVITY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4713538
An instrument is described that comprises a ratemeter, high voltage supply, and scintillation probe. The probe contains a ZnS(Ag) phosphor laid on a plastic scintillator. By the appropriate selection of amplifier gains and window thicknesses, alpha and BETA activity may be measured separately in the presence of one another and in a gamma background. gamma sensitivity is low but efficiencies have been computed for different energies. Although it is a line powered instrument it can function for 8 hr on internal rechargeable batteries for portable use. Salient features of the circuit are described and performance figures given. The setting-up procedure is appended. (auth)
