A thermocouple cable arrangement is designed in which the cables break at points near the fuel elements upon the application of a lifting load to the contact box. In the arrangement, each cable passes through a device attached to the fuel element, with a portion of its sheath within the device removed and the bare portion covered by a tensile weak link of tensile strength lower than that of the sheath. Thus, the link is the first to break when the cable is lifted, and substantially all the cables can be removed from the channels prior to the removal of fuel elements. (D.J.C.)
