EFFECTS OF X IRRADIATION ON PULMONARY TUMOR FORMATION INDUCED BY URETHAN IN THE MOUSE

Journal Article · · Bull. Assoc. Franc. Etude Cancer
OSTI ID:4713081
The effect of thoracic irradiation on the development of pulmonary tumors in XVII/G mice injected intraperitoneally with urethan was investigated. Urethan alone caused an increase in lung wt that corresponded with development of pulmonary tumors. Irradiation alone also caused a rise in lung wt due to the edema and congestion occurring in the inflammatory response. After urethan and x- ray treatment the rise in lung wt was depressed, presumably because of depression of the inflammatory reaction by the antimitotic action of urethan. The urethan- induced tumors in most cases were adenomas, and irradiation did not appear to augment the malignancy of the tumors. The results indicate that radiation renders the lung resistant to the tumorigenic action of urethan. (R.H.D.)
