Radiation-Induced Copolymerization of Acrylonitrile and Methyl Methacrylate

Journal Article · · Kogyo Kagaku Zasshi

Copolymerization of acrylonitrlie (AN) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) induced by ionizing radiation was investigated in bulk. Variables studied were: the dependence of the copolymerization rate on dose rate, polymerization at various temperatures. The copolymerization rate was proportional to the square root of dose rate in a molar equivalent mixture of monomers at room temperature. The apparent activation energy of the copolymerization was 4.62 kcal/mole in a molar equivalent mixture of the monomers. The copolymerization rate increased with a decrease of the mole fraction of AN in the monomer mixture at room temperature, while at --78 °C, maximum rate of copolymerization was observed in the mole fraction of AN of 0.75. It was concluded from the composition curves of copolymerization that the copolymerization probably proceeded by a radical mechanism in the range from 52.5 to -20 °C and by both anionic and radical mechanisms at around --78 °C.
