Radiation-Induced Copolymerization of Acrylonitrile and Styrene
Copolymerization of acrylonitrile and styrene induced by ionizing radiation was investigated in bulk. Variables studied were: the dependence of the copolymerization rate on dose rate, polymerization temperature, and monomer ratio in the monomer mixture; and the composition curves of copolymerization at various temperature. The copolymerization rate was proportional to the square root of dose rate in the molar equivalent mixture of monomers at room temperature. The apparent activation energy of the copolymerization was 6.90 kcal/mole in a molar equivalent mixture of monomer. The copolymerization rate increased with the mole fraction of acrylonitrile in the monomer mixture. It was concluded from the composition curves of polymerization that the copolymerization probably occurs by a radical mechanism in the range from room temperature to --20 c- C and by both anionic and radical mechanisms at near --78 c- C.
