EXCITATION FUNCTION FOR THE C$sup 12$$($$pi$$sup -$, $pi$$sup -$n)C$sup 11$ REACTION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4712730
The assumption that nuclear reactions of the type ZA( pi ;, pi /sup -/ n)Z/sup A-1/ and Z/sup A/( pi /sup -/, pi /sup -/p)Z-1/sup A-1/ occur by single collisions on the surface of the nucleus is examined by determining the excitation function for the reaction C/sup 12/( pi /sup -/, pi /sip -/n)C/sup 11/ and comparing it with the function for free-particle scattering of negative pions on neutrons. Cross sections for the reaction are shown, and the reaction is deemed to proceed by direct collision of an incident particle and a neutron of carbon-12. (D.C.W.)
