A theoretical study was made of the trajectories and receivers of a BETA spectrograph having trochoidal trajectories in an inhomogeneous magnetic field of revolution with constant rH. Trajectories were constructed for u/sub o/ from --180 to +180 deg at 15 deg intervals and theta /sub o/ from 0 to 24 deg at 3 deg intervals. The luminosity and power of resolution were calculated for each case and for various lengths of the detector slit and diaphragm slit. Some of the values obtained are tabulated. A mock-up of the proposed spectrograph was made to study the topography of the r/sup -1/ magnetic field. The polar pieces are trunks of a cone of revolution in mild steel connected by a core 96 mm in diameter. (J.S.R.)
