INDUCTION OF MUTATIONS BY RADIOISOTOPES

Journal Article · · Z. Vererbungslehre

The mutagenic actions of P/sup 32/-phosphate and S/suo 35/-sulfate at various concentrations on Oenothera flavens were tested. The relation between chromosome mutations (particularly fragmentations and translocations) and matrix adhesion, terminalization, interstitial chiasmas, and local achromasia was investigated. Only a slight correlation was found between chromosome mutations and matrix adhesion or frequency of terminal chiasmas. The number of interstitial chiasmas increased only slightly with mutations, although the local achromasia was greater than in the controls. A significant increase in chromosome mutations was evident with as little as 20 C P/sup 32/ per sprout, and the incidence of mutations increased with the activity. With S/sup 35/ solutions, significant increases in mutations were obtained wtth 400 C. The distribution of translocations over the genome in the experiments was similar to that previously observed with chemical mutagens. (TCO)
