ELECTROLYTIC PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF PURE METALS IN COMPACT FORM AND AN APPARATUS FOR CARRYING OUT THE PROCESS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4712427
An electrolytic process for the preparation of pure metals, using a salt melt of the metal as electrolyte, is patented. The process can be used for all metals that are plastically deformable at temperatures below the associated temperature of their electrolytic salt melt, including Ta, Th, Pu, U, Ti, Nb, Zr, Hf, Be, and the rate earth elements. During electrolytic precipitation, under nonoxidizing conditions, of the metal on the electrode, the formation of a dendritic structure is inhibited by repeated application of mechanical pressure to the deposit surface. This produces a compact, inclusion-free metal layer. Various designs for the apparatus to carry out the process are described. (M.P.G.)
