ELECTROLYTIC PRODUCTION OF METAL ALLOYS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4708571

A process for the production of alloys of Ti, Zr, and Hf from their oxides and oxygen compounds by fusion electrolysis is patented. The oxide or oxygen compound is dissolved in an electrolyte containing cations such as Ca and Sr, which are more electropositive than Ti, Zr, or Hf with respect to halogens and O. A solid anode and a liquid metallic cathode containing molten alloying metal are used. During electrolysis, the Ti, Zr, or Hf metal is deposited in the liquid cathode, forming a molten metallic alloy. The design of the electrolytic cell, details of the process, and methods for removing impurities are described. (M.P.G.)
