AN ELECTROLYTIC PROCESS FOR THE ISOTOPIC ENRICHMENT OR FRACTIONATION OF HYDROGEN

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4702154
A process for the isotopic fractionation of H by electrolytic decomposition of liquid ammonia is patented. Liquid ammonia containing an acid electrolyte, i.e., one which gives (NH/sub 4/)/sup +/ ions, is electrolyzed by means of a direct current applied between a cathode and an anode. The cathode is made of Fe, Cu, Ni, or an alloy containing one or more of these metals, and the anode is made of carbon or graphite. The process can be carried out at atmospheric pressure or higher pressure. The temperiture must correlate with the pressure to maintain the ammonia in the liquid state. Equipment for the process as described and illustrated. (M.P.G.)
