A CONTAINER FOR A RADIUM-BERYLLIUM NEUTRON SOURCE (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Radioisotopes (Tokyo) (Japan)
OSTI ID:4710117
The container of a 10 millicurie Ra- alpha - Be-neutron source which keeps the radiation dose at about 2 mrem/ hour on its surface was closely examined. Removal cross sections by Hornyak buttons yielded the following results: 0.0055 cm/sup 2//g for Pb; 0.0135 cm/sup 2//g for Fe; and 0.110 cm/sup 2/ /g for paraffin. The calculations indicated that 10 cm of Pb and 15 cm of paraffin are sufflcient to shield the container; however, if a 10-cm thick concrete layer is used, 7 cm of Pb and 10 cm of paraffin are sufficient.
